Associate Research Engineer/Chemist (1-3 positions) (Posting #1110)

Description: Interface Biologics is a privately held early commercial stage company that develops transformative biomedical polymer technology to improve the safety and effectiveness of medical devices.  The company’s primary technology focus areas are anti-thrombogenic devices that reduce thrombosis without the need for heparin and programmable combination drug delivery devices.

As a key member of cross functional development teams, the Associate Research Engineer/Chemist will apply their scientific skill set towards the development of novel biomaterial compounds for medical device applications.

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Perform a range of experiments in the laboratory to develop polymeric materials for device prototypes and applications;
  • Synthesize, purify and characterize polymeric materials to evaluate product characteristics, quality, and reproducibility;
  • Use general processing and prototyping equipment to make appropriate articles for evaluation;
  • Perform testing and analysis of materials and prototypes, using chemical analytical techniques, mechanical test equipment, biological assays, and others;
  • Prepare batch records, reports, SOPs, and presentations as required, and maintain proper documentation;
  • Interact with suppliers and contract testing facilities as required;
  • Maintain a clean and safe laboratory work environment;
  • Perform literature searches and keep abreast of scientific knowledge in related areas and fields.

Knowledge Required:

  • M.Sc., M.A.Sc., M.Eng or equivalent in chemistry, engineering or biomedical engineering, preferably related to biomedical polymers/biomaterials/polymers, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; 
  • Practical knowledge of polymer science and chemical synthesis;
  • Working knowledge of equipment and methods for mechanical testing, microscopy techniques, and biological assays would be preferred.

Skills/Competencies Required:

  • Hands on capability to use material characterization and analytical methods such as GPC, HPLC, DSC, TGA, NMR, IR, XPS, and SEM;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to work within cross functional teams;
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines without sacrificing quality;
  • Proven research capacity and problem solving skills.

Experience Preferred:

  • 1-3 years applied research or industry experience;
  • Previous experience in a pharmaceutical / biotech or medical device environment would be preferred.

Analytical Chemist (Posting #1108a)

Description:

As a key new hire and cross functional team member, the Analytical Chemist with be responsible for method development to support advancement of the company’s combination products. The position affords the opportunity to work on challenging projects in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where dedication to scientific excellence is valued.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Method development;
  • Validate analytical procedures and protocols for the analysis and characterization of monomers, polymers, drug polymers and pharmaceutical substances;
  • Perform investigations and modifications of analytical procedures and prepare method validation protocols;
  • Troubleshoot new analytical procedures;
  • As a member of various cross functional research and development teams, interpret and communicate analytical results within the scope of defined projects and lead in the improvement of methods as required;
  • Evaluate methods related to product purity, reproducibility and drug release profiles;
  • Prepare technical analytical documents and reports according to company guidelines;
  • Assist research and development teams in new method development, establishing standard operating procedures for material characterization and maintain proper documentation;
  • Provide technical expertise and advice to different projects and divisions of the company;
  • Perform work in accordance with established regulatory, compliance and safety requirements.

Knowledge Required:

  • Ph.D. in analytical chemistry with polymer and pharmaceutical experience, preferably related to biomedical polymers and drug delivery systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Broad and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of polymer and pharmaceutical characterization techniques;
  • Extensive formal training in spectroscopy and chromatography characterization techniques: FTIR, HPLC, MS, UV-Vis, NMR, GPC, GC, IC and other analytical instruments;
  • Working knowledge of material characterization methods such as DSC, TGA, XPS, SIMS, elemental analysis, mechanical testing, and microscopy techniques;
  • Industry knowledge: standards, compliance, and regulatory requirements such as ISO, ASTM, GLP, cGMP.

Skills/Competencies Required:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong problem solving skills and the ability to identify and facilitate method development initiatives;
  • Good organizational, record keeping and decision making abilities;
  • Strong inter-personal skills;
  • Able to work within cross functional teams with minimal supervision;
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and with short deadlines to accomplish objectives.

Experience Preferred:

  • 3-5 years relevant industry experience, preferably related to biomedical polymers and pharmaceutics;
  • Medical device experience, particularly with combination products, highly desirable;
  • In depth, hands on experience in method development and validation of analytical procedures;
  • Demonstrated success in achieving results in a small company environment or equivalent.
